February 2010

February is a busy month for the race teams.

The Dual City slalom was our first event of the season.  The team performed well and results can be seen our NOD Races web page.

Our next event was the Mealey Classic 2010. The scope of the event was expanded to include 4 Super G races, 1 Super Combined race and 2 Giant Slalom races. This was a major accomplishment as 2 extra races were added.  Mother nature was a strong supporter as the weather provided some excellent conditions for the races as well as comfortable temperatures for the officials and volunteers.  A special thanks to John Mealey and Heather Metzger for their continuing support for this race event.  Also the efforts of all the volunteers and officials who assisted in event cannot go unrecognized.  It was another extraordinary race series and the series could not been possible without the help of the volunteers.  Thank you again.

The athletes took advantage of the favourable conditions and performed extremely well.  Results can be seen on our NOD Races web page.

December 2009

Northern Ontario Division has launched the first annual ski-a-thon.  It will run from January 22nd through the 24th at the four ski hill that form part of Northern Ontario Division.  It is a potential major fundraiser for the division and is being lead by Roger Hetu, Program Director of Northern Ontario Division.  It is the hope of Northern Ontario Division, that this event grows in success each and every year, and helps place NOD back on the map in Ontario.

         Ski-a-thon details

The pre-season camp in Mont Tremblant was a success.  The weather was cold, and the conditions improved daily.  Lane space was available over three days and allowed drills and gate training in slalom as well as GS.  The interaction between the NOD coaches and racers was invaluable as we continue to rebuild NOD.  Roger Hetu's interaction was inspirational for all who participated.  The Ontario Team and Ontario Development Team were there as well as the SOD escarpment team.  AOA was also running a pre-season camp during the week.  All in all, alot of racers and training activity for all of racers to experience!

        NOD Picture

Swiss Chalet Ontario K2 Championships

March was a challenging month for our current and past club members.  SSR hosted the prestigious Swiss Chalet Ontario K2 Championships.  The event ran from Wednesday March 4th to Saturday March 7th.  The event featured the top 150, 13 and 14 year old in the province competing in Super Giant Slalom, Super Combined, Giant Slalom and Slalom disciplines.

The event showcased the excellent terrain offered by Searchmont Resort to the athletes and coaches of this province.  The terrain combined with good weather conditions left the visiting athletes & coaches with an exceptional impression of our jewel in the north!

Kaili Labelle earned her place with the elite of the province with an outstanding performance in the event.  Kaili ended up with an overall eighth place ranking for the event with top ten finishes in Super Giant Slalom and Giant Slalom.  Kaili qualified to represent Northern Ontario at the Canadian K2 Championships at Silver Star in Vernon BC.  The Canadian's will run from March 30th to April 3rd. AOA Development Director, Heather Metzger. "WOW !!!  What a great event !  Great racing by many incredible athletes, excellent race quality, conditions and terrain. Searchmount came through again with another amazing event for the K2 Provincials. This is just a wonderful venue for this age group - the terrain is challenging, conditions were excellent and the Race Organizers, Officials and Volunteers ...awesome!!.

A special thanks go out to all the volunteers that stepped forward to assist us in making this event happen.  With out the assistance of the volunteers, these events would not happen.

Wiring Project:

Volunteers began the large project of re-wiring the hill for race timing and communications.  The original wiring had a significant part of its backbone on the Double Chair towers and it was showing its age.  Intermittent problems and sensitivity to weather and moisture created havoc when timing races.

The new installation consists of PVC piping running from the top of the Double Chair to the Race Building.  The PVC conduit will consist of two cables, one 6 pair cable for timing requirements and a second cable for on hill communications.
